Why can some belts last ten years, while others only a few months?

Both are industrial belts. Some run for eight or ten years without issue. Others break within months of installation. What makes the difference? – The belt material.

  1. What is an EPDM industrial belt?  

EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. It is a high-performance synthetic rubber. EPDM industrial belts are made primarily from this material. They offer excellent heat resistance, ozone resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance. That is why they are widely used across many industries.

👍 Advantage 1: Stable performance in both high and low temperatures

EPDM belts operate across a very wide temperature range. They perform reliably from -40°C to 120°C.

In northern Australia, tropical regions like Darwin and Cairns experience year-round heat. Temperatures often stay above 30°C during the rainy season. In southern temperate regions like Melbourne and Hobart, winter lows can drop to 3–8°C, and even near zero in mountainous areas. Under such extreme climate variations, EPDM belts maintain consistent transmission performance.

Ozone and UV rays are the main “killers” of rubber ageing. Ordinary rubber cracks and hardens under ozone and sunlight exposure, eventually failing. EPDM belts, however, have natural resistance to ozone and UV. They are especially suitable for outdoor equipment or high-ozone environments.

EPDM belts offer excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, solvents, and many chemicals. In corrosive environments such as chemical plants and mining operations, EPDM belts last far longer than ordinary rubber belts.

The wear resistance and anti-ageing properties of EPDM belts give them a service life several times longer than ordinary rubber belts. Although the initial purchase cost is slightly higher, the long-term benefits include fewer replacements and less downtime. Overall cost-effectiveness is superior.

  3. What is the difference between EPDM and ordinary rubber?  

Traditional industrial belts are mostly made of Neoprene (CR). Under high temperatures and ozone exposure, they tend to crack and harden.

EPDM is completely different. It does not crack like ordinary rubber. Instead, it wears down gradually, much like a tyre. That is why EPDM belts can last 3 to 4 times longer than ordinary belts.
